Frequently Asked Questions

Do you have any questions about wood floor sanding and renovating in Sydenham SE26? There are literally scores of them and they’ve all been put to us countless times during the course of our 20-year career providing floor sanding and finishing services in Sydenham. Here are some of them. Contact us if you don’t see yours and we’ll be happy to help.

HOW LONG WILL YOU BE HERE?

We do the work as fast as we can without sacrificing quality. For a regular sized room like a lounge, dining room or hallway we’ll take a day to repair and sand it and a further day to apply the finish. After we leave, you’ll need to allow the floor to sit undisturbed for a day or two so that the finish can cure and harden properly before you move the furniture back in.

If the repairs to your floor are more extensive than expected you may need to allow a little extra time to get the boards ready for sanding down. This will all be explained in the course of your free assessment, which kicks off the whole process.

CAN I EXPECT DESERT FORM OF DUST IN MY HOUSE?

Technology has marched on since we started out in the sanding business 20 years ago. Nowadays, we use equipment that has been specially designed with maximum dust-retention as a priority. Very little dust will escape into your room, and the sanding mechanism is now so refined and adjustable that no more wood will be stripped off than is strictly necessary. This is all a great improvement on the days when sanding down a wooden floor was like trench warfare!

In any case, our Sydenham floor sanding and finishing teams always take care to completely seal off other rooms so that any dust which does escape won’t get far, and we thoroughly tide up before we leave.

WHAT IS THE BEST FINISH?

Unless we’re working in an exceptionally busy public space such as a conference centre, school or restaurant, it doesn’t make a great deal of functional difference which finish you go for. They’re all eco-friendly and equally effective, so it usually comes down to personal taste.

A stain and varnish finish is perennially popular, especially for floors in bathrooms and kitchens where spillage is likely, because the varnish will form a good seal across the surface of the wood. It’s also worth mentioning here that we use stains to colour the wood and transparent varnishes to protect it. This is in contrast to using coloured varnishes such as you’ll find in DIY outlets. These are admittedly more convenient, but the colour will deepen unpredictably as successive coats of varnish are applied.

For living areas like lounges, customers often prefer to use an oil finish. This penetrates deep inside the wood and results in a deep, golden glow that is extremely attractive. Also, by using oil you’ll be able to carry out local repairs when patches appear, which is not possible with a waxed or varnished floor.

WHY FILL THE GAP?

When your floorboards were merely used as slavish supports for your fitted carpet it didn’t matter about the gaps because a thick underlay and thick pile carpet on top eliminated draughts. Now that your natural wood floorboards have been liberated, however, the gaps will need to be filled in to stop draughts developing between the new flooring and exterior wall airbricks, and to stop your heating bills from rocketing!

Also, exposed floorboards will creak and groan if there are gaps between them, and we want a solid expanse of sealed flooring before we start any sanding and finishing. It’s more functional and certainly more aesthetically pleasing that way.

WILL BARE WOOD BE A PROBLEM FOR MY ALLERGY?

Soft furnishings such as carpets and cushions are a breeding ground for dust mites. These are microscopic monsters that feed on shed human skin and thrive in such environments, causing and exacerbating allergic reactions. Replacing carpets with finished boards is excellent news for allergy sufferers. You can lay nice clean rugs on your new flooring instead.
